I wish that I could guarantee that once you attend a Streetwise workshop that you would never be at risk of becoming a victim. But the truth is, there are no guarantees! The best we can do is learn ways to recognize the potential for danger and how to react if we find ourselves in a threatening situation.
My goal is to not create paranoia but to create awareness. Having knowledge of how to recognize and avoid situations that could become dangerous will help build confidence and keep you safe.
One of the ways to help you be prepared to react to a threatening situation is to role play.
Asking questions like "what would I do if..." will help you respond quickly to a situation.
- What would you do if you were sitting in a restaurant and someone came in with a gun? Would you know where the nearest exit is?
- Are you or the person you are with keeping an eye on the door?
Would you try to run, hide or fight?
When we role play these types of scenarios we will respond quicker to them if they ever happen.
Do you have a plan in place for if you find an intruder in your home?
Do you have a plan in place if you have an active shooter situation at work?
What will you do if someone knocks on your door? Will you open the door even if you don't know who it is?
Role playing these situations will have you prepared to make safe decisions, should the situation occur!
My husband and I check each other when we are out. Walking through a store, my husband will ask "where's the nearest exit?"
At home, we have plans for fires, intruders or the creepy guy knocking on the door (and not just the dog that will do more damage than a bomb).
